Disney California Adventure Announces Transformation of Hollywood Land into Animation Boulevard

ANAHEIM, CA - Disney California Adventure is excited to unveil plans for a remarkable transformation: Hollywood Land will soon become Animation Boulevard, a celebration of Disney’s rich history and the magic of animation.

Walt Disney once said, "Animation offers a medium of storytelling and visual entertainment which can bring pleasure and information to people of all ages everywhere in the world." Inspired by Walt's vision, Animation Boulevard will honor the timeless art of animation that unites, inspires, and entertains audiences worldwide.

A Journey Through Time and Animation

Guests will step into the birthplace of Disney’s most iconic characters, walking through a timeline that spans the history of Disney animation. From the classic Walt Disney Studios Burbank campus of the 1940s to the contemporary Roy E. Disney Animation Building, Animation Boulevard will offer an immersive experience reflecting the evolution of Disney animation.

New Attractions and Experiences

  • Steamboat Weenie’s: Formerly Award Wieners, this eatery will feature a nostalgic black-and-white theme, paying homage to Steamboat Willie’s monumental impact on Disney’s history.

  • Mickey’s PhilharMagic: This beloved attraction will remain, with new show variations featuring scenes from Tangled, Wreck-It Ralph, The Jungle Book, Hercules, Moana, and Mulan, offering guests a different adventure each time they visit.

  • The Little Mermaid: Swapping places with Monsters, Inc., Ariel’s Undersea Adventure will bring the magic of The Little Mermaid to Animation Boulevard, complete with an immersive new entrance and queue inspired by Prince Eric’s seaside kingdom.

  • House of Mouse - Villains Takeover: This new 4D attraction in Stage 17 will feature Mickey and Oswald teaming up to thwart a villainous plot led by Maleficent, taking guests on an adventurous ride through Disney California Adventure and Disneyland.

Interactive Fun and Character Encounters

  • Character Quest: This augmented reality game allows guests to chase and "tag" Disney characters throughout Animation Boulevard, with points awarded for finding rare characters like Oswald the Lucky Rabbit.

  • Off the Page: The existing Animation Building will be rebranded, featuring rotational character meet-and-greets, including rare and obscure Disney characters, alongside the return of Belle’s Library and Ursula’s Grotto.

  • Computer Animation Lab (CAL): Replacing Turtle Talk, this new interactive experience will let guests animate CGI characters and share their creations on social media.

New Shows and Entertainment

  • Once Upon a Studio Puppet Show: Inspired by the animated short, this delightful puppet show will feature beloved Disney characters performing in the windows of the animation studios, creating a whimsical and interactive experience for guests.

  • Drawn to Life: A Cirque du Soleil Experience: A special 30-minute version of the acclaimed show will be presented in the new Animation Building replica, combining acrobatics and animated visuals to bring Disney stories to life on stage.

  • A Magical Kiss Goodnight: To end the day, Animation Boulevard will feature a "Character Kiss Goodnight" 30 minutes after park closure. Lights will dim and projections will create the illusion of characters from Once Upon a Studio wandering the Boulevard, bidding farewell to guests with a sprinkle of pixie dust.

Animation Boulevard will offer a unique and immersive experience that celebrates the art of Disney animation in a way that is both nostalgic and modern. This transformation aligns perfectly with the spirit of Disney California Adventure, providing guests with an unforgettable journey through the magic of Disney storytelling.
